What makes thermal leggings material different to standard materials?
Thermal or winter clothing really help you to stay cozy in winter time. While inexpensive thermal leggings are normally created just to keep the wearer a bit warmer, more expensive versions leggings work through what is called wicking. Wicking fabrics (sometimes referred to as Wick Away or Wickaway) absorb moisture on the skin and move it to the material surface spreading moisture out across the fabric so it easily evaporates.
Thermal clothing is often made from specially manufactured Polyester or Wool and may include a blend of other materials like Cotton and Silk.
One of the best known trade names for thermal clothing material is Coolmax which uses polyester which uses specially manufactured fibers of a special shape and placed very close together to cause capillary action thus increased evaporation.
Merino Wool is another well known natural thermal material. Merino wool has very fine fibers which, like Coolmax, are placed very close together to aid capillary action and evaporation.
While special thermal polyester is more efficient than Merino wool at removing moisture it is not so good at dealing with odours; due to the organic materials in wool it has much better antibacterial properties and better at dealing with odours and staining.
A less common thermal material is Bamboo which has similar properties to Merino.
Different sorts of leggings have been developed for different activities, eg snowboarding, trekking or skiing while others are simply made for everyday use on cold days.
Some thermal leggings are footed, so they fit like tights ensuring full skin covering of the leg.
Thermal leggings are usually not 100% cotton as it does not have great thermal properties.
The thermal type are typically thicker than standard versions and may be manufactured with two or more layers. Thermal material is less likely to be 100% Cotton or Polyester as on their own these materials do not have the best thermal properties.
When choosing thermal leggings you should consider where and when you need to wear them:
- At home as pyjama bottoms
- Outside during cold weather or during winter
- For specialist sports use eg Skiing, Ice Skating or Hiking
Generally the colder the conditions you will experience will mean you need to spend more to get the desired benefits.
For outdoor pursuits thermal leggings are great as a base layer to help maintain correct body temperature and to help prevent cold setting in, with additional layers to work as insulation by trapping air in between layers.
Many leggings are advertised as Fleece and Fur and these are the terms that people often search for. Generally these will be warmer than standard material, due to thickness or the structure of the linings, however if you want these for very cold conditions you really need to be looking for specialist materials specifically
designed for extremely low temperatures. Specialist thermal clothing will always cost more and the product description will normally emphasise the thermal properties and the materials used.
